Superhero Trading Cards
Students began this lesson by looking at comic heroes and how they connect to real life. We discussed how X-Men connects with the Civil Rights Movement, with people being discriminated against due to differences. We talked about how Professor Xavier connects to the real life hero, Martin Luther King Jr., by believing that everyone should have access to equal rights and that the best way to achieve that was through non-violent measures.
Students then brainstormed issues that affect our world today. These issues ranged from problems in our school (bullying, popularity) to problems that affect our global society (prejudice, global warming). Students were then challenged to design a hero that could help solve some of these problems and make the world a better place.
After the brainstorming and character design, students created trading cards, focusing on emphasis and composition. The last day was spent trading our cards with others, and reflecting on how we can help make change in real life.
