Narrative Art
Narrative art is art that tells a story. 1st graders began this unit by looking at the work of contemporary artist, Trenton Doyle Hancock. Hancock has created many characters for his art, including the mounds. Mounds are half human, half plant creatures that occur repeatedly in his art. 1st graders designed their own characters, some human, others monsters, and even a few objects. Next, we looked at story quilts by another contemporary artist, Faith Ringgold. We thought she used her imagination and memory to think of ideas for her art. Students then thought of and illustrated a story about their characters. Last up was creating a border and adding symbols to show more about our characters!
