Monster Finger Puppets
I can create art that has personal meaning.
Third graders began this unit by reading Jeremy Draws a Monster, which led us into a discussion about fears and monsters. In the book, Jeremy is afraid to go outside, but faces his fear and ends up making new friends. Students shared their own fears and we discussed ways to overcome them, including, remaining calm, being courageous, facing our fears, thinking of happy things, and talking with friends and family. Students then imagined what their fears would look like if they were monsters and sketched their ideas. Next, we looked at some monsters from Pixar’s Monster Inc. and thought about ways we could make our fear monsters silly. Up next: puppet making! Students used felt, fun fabrics, and embellishments to create their scary and silly monster puppets.
