Ice Cream Cone Coot
It seems like it has been ages since we started this lesson! That’s probably because it has been. We started this project, took a break to make some awesome coil pots, and then returned to finish them. The students really had fun using their creativity in this project. We read the oldie but goodie book, Ice Cream Cone Coot (and other rare birds), on the first day. The book is filled with illustrations of birds made from everyday objects (can you guess what the “coot” is made out of?). Plus it rhymes, and who doesn’t love that? 3rd graders created their own imaginative creatures by combining an animal and an object. They drew these animals using their choice of materials. They finished out the project by creating an environment or habitat for their animals with oil pastel and watercolor. Students were challenged to show depth of space through use of overlapping and horizon line.
