Joan Miró Inspired Paintings
The second graders began the year by looking at the paintings of Spanish artist Joan Miró. Students discovered that they could all find different images in his abstract paintings. We decided that a lot of Miró's paintings were created in a similar style including many black names and shapes, a simple background, mostly primary colors, and many characters and creatures.
To generate ideas for his artmaking, Miró would often employ the surrealist drawing technique called automatic drawing. Students used this and began to create lines and shapes automatically, without thinking about their drawing. We then returned to our drawings and had fun finding images in our marks. To finish our artworks we added color, traced with sharpie, and created a watercolor wash!
