Pointillism Trees
After having worked with pixels to create 8 bit art, 5th graders investigated other images constructed of dots. We discussed that images we print and see on screens are made up of little dots of color, layered or placed really close together. We looked at newspaper images with magnifying glasses to see the dots. We don’t usually see them because our eyes mix the colors for us- optical mixing!
We then looked at the work of post-impressionist painter, Georges Seurat. He is famous for the technique he developed, pointillism. The Columbus Topiary Park is designed after his famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Students tried their hand at art en plein air and worked outside, painting trees in the style of pointillism.
