The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are used in artworks all around us. From paintings, to sculptures, to printmaking, you can look inside and see elements like lines and colors and principles like movement and pattern. Third graders delved into them a little deeper with this unit. They began by finding them in images of famous artworks and then used scraps of paper to create various compositions. Students used the art room ipad to take photos of these temporary works.
The next day included experimenting with monoprinting to create prints showing elements and principles. Monoprinting is a type of printmaking in which each image can only be created once.
Finally, students cut out sections of their prints, and combined them with collage to show different elements and principles.
We completed the unit with some FUNprints, inspired by Ed Emberly!
