Ice Cream
Inspired by Wayne Thiebaud
Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter who is associated with the Pop Art Movement and is best known for painting everyday objects. First graders were excited to focus on his dessert paintings! Pies, cake, and ice cream- oh my! First graders gave their opinions on how and why Thiebaud created his paintings. We discussed the texture in his paintings and their realistic style. Students then created their own ice cream flavors by mixing tempera paint and added texture with assorted objects including Q-tips and forks. Students collaged their painted paper into complete, triple-decker, ice cream cones. Some even have a cherry on top or some delicious sprinkles!
