Alexander Calder Inspired Mobiles
This lesson was inspired by the fifth graders' ELA classroom. They are in three groups and each group is reading a book that connects to a famous artist. One group is reading The Calder Game. The Calder Game is a mystery in which a sculpture by Alexander Calder goes missing.
In art, we are building upon our understanding of Alexander Clader and making connections to science (kinetic energy and balance) to create mobiles. We learned that Calder was a mechanical engineer before he became and artist and that he invented the mobile. We saw that Calder's mobiles are abstract, but have shapes and designs that remind us of the natural world.
How is physical balance part of Calder's mobiles? How about visual balance? Where else in life do you encounter balance?
We have begun cutting and decorating our shapes. Next up- constructing the mobiles.
