Layered Places- Past, Present, and Future
For this lesson, students examined the work of Julie Mehretu. We watched a video that showed Julie Mehretu's process and included her insight into her work. We saw that she creates large abstract works with the help of assistants. Her work is often influenced by places and structures and can have a map like or diagrammatic quality. We saw she uses a lot of layering and planning but also expressive mark making. In her works, we searched for visual textures.
Students then explored using dip pens and practiced creating visual textures.
For our final project, students chose a place that they visit often or that is important to them. They thought about what the place looked like in the past and how it will change in the future. Students created one drawing showing each time period and are layering them together to create an abstracted image of the place.
