Cave Art
Students began this unit by taking a virtual tour of the Lascaux caves in France and saw large animals painted on the walls. Students discussed why and how they thought people made the cave paintings. Students learned that the cave art was created by prehistoric people, or people who lived very long ago, before humans had invented the written word. Many of us thought they used materials in their environment to create paints, maybe dirt or berries, and that they made the art to tell stories, show memories, and decorate their homes. We turned off the lights, played a campfire video, and pretended we were prehistoric people in a cave. Students imagined what stories they would tell and created animal drawings. Since cave walls and dirt floors are in short supply at Worthington Hills, we created our art with materials that are plentiful around us, including brown paper grocery bags, oil pastel and paint.
