Oaxacan Inspired Animal Paintings
The third graders began this unit by reading, A Tale of Rabbit and Coyote , a story inspired by Mexican folk tales. Students then wrote their own folk tales about animals. After writing our stories, we looked at the animal carvings made by the Oaxacan people (pronounce Wa-haw-kan). We noticed they used many elements and principles of art in their carvings. The bright colors and interesting patterns stood out the most! Students then created a drawing about their folk tale, inspired by the style of the Oaxacan carvings. We used oil pastel and water resist to finish the artworks.
