Painting paper for our collages...
Painted Paper Collages
For this unit, students took inspiration from Romare Bearden and the Harlem Renaissance. Romare Bearden was an African American collage artist who grew up in Harlem, New York. He was greatly influenced by music, and music became a common subject in his work. 6th graders chose a song, thought about the meaning and feeling, and created a piece of painted paper to reflect the feel of the song. Students then collaged their papers into instruments and scenes. They focused on creating the shapes of the instruments and layering materials.
