Have you ever heard of Aminah Robinson? She was an amazing Columbus artist who worked in many media from painting, to quilts, to mixed media and "hogmawg". "Hogmawg" is a homemade clay Robinson's father taught her to make when she was a little girl.
First graders looked at different works by Aminah Robinson and talked about what they saw, what they thought of the work, and what they wondered. Students had some great ideas and interpretations about her work! They saw small details like street names, buildings, fabric and stitches. They thought Aminah Robinson often makes work about her community and people who are important to her.
Students then selected a person who is important to them and drew a portrait of that person. We finished the works by making a 3D frame out of our own homemade clay and decorated it with beads and paint.
