Oaxacan Inspired Animal Sculptures
Oaxaca is one of the largest states in Mexico and has a rich tradition of folk art. Oaxacan folk artists are famous for their animal sculptures. These sculptures are usually bright colors and are covered with detailed patterns.
3rd graders began this unit by reading a folk tale from Oaxaca, The Tale of Rabbit and Coyote, and wrote their own folk tales about an animal. Students then constructed their animals using cardboard tubes, tape, and hot glue. After construction, students painted a base coat. They finished up these awesome sculptures by using a principle of art- pattern!
