2nd graders began the year by looking at the abstract paintings of Spanish artist Joan Miró. Students looked closely, making observations, finding details, and describing what they saw in his artworks. We then discussed characteristics of Joan Miró's style and thought he used a lot of black lines and shapes, primary colors, body parts, characters and creatures, and simple backgrounds.
Joan Miró often used the surrealist drawing game of automatic drawing in his artwork. Automatic drawing is drawing without thinking, as a way to create something different than you would have otherwise. Students began their artwork by using automatic drawing. We then looked into our lines and shapes and tried to turn them into something new. We finished the artworks by adding color and a painted background.
